Assignment #2: QSEN CORE COMPETENCIES PURPOSE
The course is organized using the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) framework
that includes core competencies for our profession. We will focus on the core competencies for
health care professionals that are the basis for education and practice.
The competent health care professional is expected to:
1) Provide patient centered care
2) Work on interdisciplinary teams
3) Employ evidence-based practice
4) Apply quality improvement (this includes safety)
5) Utilize informatics
Students will define and describe the core competency; relate the competency to the ANA
standards, social policy statement and code for nurses; provide examples from their own
observations, practice, and/or the literature of a best practice that reflects this competency;
describe how you practice to reflect this competency in their own clinical setting as a student
nurse; and, discuss how this competency enhances patient safety.
HOW TO PROCEED WITH THIS ASSIGNMENT
Using knowledge, observations and reflections to date, students will have the opportunity to
articulate their ideas about the QSEN Core Competencies. Refer to your text and other sources
for what content to include in your QSEN Core Competencies paper (be sure to cite and
reference the sources you use appropriately).
