Assignment 3

Negotiation and/or Conflict Resolution Role-Plays

What is role-playing?

Role play is the act of imitating the character and behavior of someone who is different from yourself, for example as a training exercise. Role-playing takes place between two or more people who act out roles to explore a particular scenario.
Requirements

  • Role Play Scenarios (15 marks)

Create THREE scenarios for a conflict resolution or negotiation role play involving 2-4 part-time or full-time college students. Here are three example scenarios:

Example Scenario 1: Every time there is a test, you notice the student sitting next to you copying your answers. You don’t like this person cheating and you’re tired of it. You want them to do their own work.

Example Scenario 2:  Abdullah works as an engineer in a software firm in Bahrain and he loves his job very much. He is hard-working and always on time at work. Hi co-worker, Ibrahim, often comes late to work and tries to find loopholes, so he can do the least amount of work. Both work on the same project and report to the same supervisor. The company has a policy that, if an employee comes late to work, he has to meet his supervisor before starting work. One day Ibrahim came in 40 minutes late to work. Out of concern, Abdullah reminded Ibrahim about the company policy, stressing he should meet his supervisor. Ibrahim got angry and told Abdullah that their supervisor will never know he was late. Ibrahim continues to come late for the next few days. Upset with Ibrahim’s behavior, Abdullah decides not to talk to him

Example Scenario 3: Someone is sending you threatening messages through e-mail but they have made up a fake e-mail address so you can’t trace it. However, you think you know who it is because this person constantly makes similar threats (under their breath) when you walk by them at work or on campus.

Each scenario MUST have between 150 to 250 words and MUST address one of the negotiation styles or strategies for addressing conflict discussed in class. Any scenario that does not meet the target word count, is either irrelevant or off-topic, will be marked ZERO. Plagiarism, copying from the internet or any other sources without citation will result in an automatic ZERO grade, with no opportunity for resubmission. Each scenario MUST be written by you alone. Previous assignments CAN NOT be used, period.

  • Role Play Script (10 marks)

Develop a role play script for ONE of the scenarios you have created. Here is an example role play script between a customer and a waiter at a coffee-shop:
Abdullah:      Hi.
Ibrahim:         A tall coffee please.
Abdullah:      Cream or sugar?
Ibrahim:         Two sugars please.
Abdullah:       5.50 SAR
Ibrahim:         Thanks.
Each role play script MUST have between 150 to 250 words and MUST address one of scenarios you have created. Any role play script that does not meet the target word count will be marked ZERO. Plagiarism, copying from the internet or any other sources without citation will result in an automatic ZERO grade, with no opportunity for resubmission. Each role play script MUST be written by you alone. Previous assignments CAN NOT be used, period.
