After reading chapter one in the course textbook discuss the following scenario.  

Discussion Question:

Discuss how information released to the public can affect a company’s actions. For example, an employee’s comment to a group of friends is released on social media and results in the termination of the individual’s employment.  Does organizational policy regarding social media protect the organization? Explain.

Watch Dan Pink video:  Drive: the surprising truth that motivates us. (Links to an external site.)

Then review chapter 5 regarding motivation.  Understanding motivation is important because compensation, turnover, and other HR concerns are related to it.  Chapter 5 also outlines four theories (Need, Two-Factor, Expectancy, and Equity) that concentrate on intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

Assignment:

  • After watching Daniel Pink’s video, research motivational factors and align one of the theories that you believe aligns with the video.

Discussion Board Directions:

  • You will not be able to view your classmate’s posts until you post.
  • Your initial post should be 3-4 paragraphs in length.
  • Include one peer reviewed journal article to support your post. 
  • Your initial post is due by Thursday. This allows you and your classmates time to read and reply.
  • For full credit, you are required to respond to a minimum of two classmates. Please begin your reply by addressing the student by name. Your responses must be completed by Sunday at midnight.

Module 03: Video Discussion

This week the discussion format will be in the form of video presentations instead of written format. Please record a 3-5 minute video using the feature in Canvas (next to the textbook icon you will see a media strip, if you click on this you will be able to record your presentation) or you can record on a Smartphone and upload.

If you are unsure how to record a video discussion, please contact the Canvas help desk for instructions on how to complete a video recording. The Canvas help desk is available 24/7 and you can find their contact information under the “?” on the left of your screen. 

Video Discussion:

Your HR team is responsible for new employee orientation/onboarding.  Please share an orientation/onboarding plan you have or would implement for new employees.

Considerations for your plan (not requirements):

– Outline key purpose or purposes.

– Identify process for background check, paperwork, and first day of employment.

– Generational considerations.

– Identify your plan after initial orientation/onboarding process.
